Week 8: Building Interior Final

I cleaned up one of the previous thumbnails to arrive at this drawing.  The setting is inside the large central building in my exterior callouts.  It's a hallway inside the Beast's castle.  Done in Photoshop.

Week 7: Exterior Building Color

I applied a wash of colors to the Beast's Castle.  This is mainly an indication of local color, materials and texture; not a lighting pass...yet.

Week 6: Building Interior Thumbnails

These are explorations of the interior of the central building within the Beast's Castle.  Settings range from cavernous cathedral-like spaces to single room dens.  I tried to infuse narrative elements.  The wider spaces could be ominous.  The smaller ones could appear like cozy hideaways with collections and treasures of the reclusive Beast.

Week 5: Large Exterior Building Callout

I defined and refined the Beast's Castle.  Since exploring both Gothic and Gaudi architectural styles, I introduced some Art Deco and Sci-Fi elements.  Some forms in this drawing are unresolved and the overall design uneven, but I pleasantly surprised myself with the results of this exercise.

Week 4: Exterior Callouts

process work

process work

These are 3/4 aerial views of castles I am designing.  Departing from illustration and composition studies, these aim to describe more of the form and function of these locations.  I attempted to use lines to define form and space rather than pattern, which serves only aesthetic purpose here.

Stylistically, I infused more fanciful references such as Antoni Gaudi architecture and Final Fantasy XIV concepts, while maintaining gothic elements for dark realism.  I am pleased that it feels more unique than previous attempts.

Week 3: Exterior Details

Castle of The Beast

Castle exploration drawings

Merchant's family country residence
The goal of these drawings was to define the details of individual buildings within my established locations.  These could afford more description of the architecture.  However, I produced some unexpected environments around the buildings.

Week 2: Thumbnail Marker Rendering

I pushed the compositions of this European setting toward more original and fanciful landscapes.  I tried to emphasize more terrain variation.  Also I explored different perspectives and ranges of shots, from low to aerial; long shots to panoramic layouts.

Week 1: Basic Composition Thumbnails

I chose the French fairy tale Beauty & The Beast
The setting is Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages.  This is a classic fantasy genre with a realistic art style.  I am focusing on three distinct locations in the story: a city where the Merchant visits, a modest country farm where the his family lives, and a hidden palace where The Beast lives.
